Life Group 42

Life Group 42 is the small group of families from Vanguard Church that Patti and Mark belong to.  They consist of 14 adults, 2 teens, 10 children and 1 baby.  When they heard about the earthquake in February, they immediately stepped up and sent money for the relief efforts.  They have prayed for and cared for the people of ABC from far away.  So it was a sweet time of fellowship when they met Ed and Paz for the first time tonight at their every other Sunday potluck and meeting.
Ed and Paz made Filipino dishes of PANCIT AND LUMPIA - everyone loved it.

It was their first time to share with American friends - the hardship and struggles as well as ongoing joys and victories of life and ministry in Ayungon.  Everyone was blessed to hear their stories, see photos and pray & dream of ways to continue partnering with them in sharing God's love with the people of Ayungon and Tibyawan.  Yes, we even talked about a short term trip to help with re-building!  Wouldn't that be awesome!

While they are in the States for the next month or so, Ed and Paz are more than happy to join small groups and churches - to share about their life and needs in Ayungon and advocate for the families at Ayungon Bible Church and daughter church Tibyawan Bible Church.  Please give them a call or email Ed at his email if you would like to arrange a group meeting and have them share.  They hope to go to Dallas, Houston, Chicago and Atlanta while they are Stateside.

Stateside

Ed and Paz have decided to fly to the States, where they will visit family and friends.  Here are some of their photos from their travels so far.

Their port of entry was Los Angeles, where they stayed a few days with their son Eulogio, Jr. (fondly known as "Jr." as he was growing up in Chicago and Dallas), his wife Juliet and their 5 year old daughter Cecilia.

They flew to Colorado Springs where their daughter Patti, her husband Mark and children live and where they consider their home-base.  Grandkids Kellyn and Rylie greeted their Lolo and Lola with hugs and a sign.

The day after they arrived was Mother's Day - it was special to celebrate it together for the first time in awhile, along with Mark's family who live in Colorado Springs.

We pray for a restful and productive trip as Ed and Paz acclimate to the weather, altitude and time zone.

Celebrating 81 years of God's faithfulness

Today (March 11th) is Dad's 81st Birthday.  It was a year ago when the kids and I (Mark couldn't get off work and also had arm surgery during that time) enjoyed celebrating his 80th with family and friends in Ayungon.  Here's a quick look back at that amazing day....

Dad's party was on March 19th, the day after we arrived.  The morning started with a worship service in the sanctuary (the building that collapsed in the earthquake).  The Bible verse for the month was appropriate for the occasion.  By the way all of those letters and balloons were painstakingly drawn and cut by hand - as is most of all the decorations they put up in the church.

You only turn 80 once - so they went all out and had a huge feast (a couple of pigs and a cow were slaughtered) - and had over 200 guests.  Everyone had a blast celebrating dad, feasting on all the food, and laughing and listening to all the stories and songs shared about him.  He loved it all.

Happy 81st Birthday to a man full of passion and purpose, who loves his Lord God with all his heart, soul and strength - and who shares Jesus'  love, hope wisdom to all he knows.  May God continue to bless mom and dad as they faithfully love and serve Him in Ayungon.

Salvaging the Sanctuary

The sanctuary part of ABC (where main services were held) was where the roof completely collapsed (see earlier post for more pics and see the photo on the sidebar for how the front of the sanctuary looked like from the road.)

ABC has a large youth group population - here are some of the teen boys who have volunteered with clean up efforts.
Mom and other ladies in the church managed to salvage and wash the hand sewn curtains from the sanctuary, and here they are drying out on some of the recovered bench pews (a lot of them were damaged from the roof collapsing).
One of mom's "treasures on earth" were all the Bibles and Christian books she collected over the years and also what friends from churches have donated to ABC - she was distraught when the rains came and ruined most of them. They are drying them out here, but some of them are beyond repair - which some of my friends have already suggested that a book drive would be fun to organize and replace those books with many newer copies.

Recovery Efforts

It's been 3 1/2 weeks since the "big one" hit Negros Island - according to some reports I have read - there have been hundreds if not a thousand aftershocks since then.  I even read somewhere that a group of scientists in the Philippines wanted to change the 2/6/12 earthquake - from a 6.9 on the Richter scale - up to an 8.0.

I have been so encouraged to read stories after stories of locals, nationals and even ex-pat Ayunganons all over the world rallying to help out their hometown with donations and coming out to volunteer and help with distributing food or cleaning up or re-building homes.  I wish I could recount each story and photo on this blog.

Mom and Dad continue to help where they can.  They have targeted 32 families in their church who badly need help with re-building their homes.  So far - friends in Dallas and here in Colorado Springs have sent in a little over $2,000 to help them!  Wow!   We are grateful for people's hearts and generosity during these hard financial times.  This past week I received a check from a couple who don't even know me or my parents - they heard about the earthquake through good friends of mine and Mark's - and they felt led to reach out and help out ABC.  Thank You Lord!!

Here are some photos mom sent me recently. These are just a glimpse of the terrible damage many have to deal with.  The photos below are of church members or families of church members.

Special thanks to my cousin RJ (who commented on one of my earlier posts) - for helping her with the technical tasks of uploading pictures.

Letter of Encouragement

I received a gift and a sweet note from my parents' friend Peggy Rosenlund - from Scofield Church, Maranatha Sunday School class days.  Mom and Dad still keep in touch with many from that group from so long ago. I don't think she'll mind that I copy it on here, to encourage not only my parents and the people of ABC, but to all who read this.

2/15/12
Dear Ed and Paz,
We are all grieved with you about the earthquake, so many homes destroyed and the church building that you had worked so hard to build - you know as well as I do - that the church is not really the building....but the heart of the individuals that have trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior.

God seldom tells us the "why" in our lives - and even if we knew the why - it does not change the events - His ways are higher than our ways, His thoughts are higher than our thoughts....May our Savior encourage your hearts during these difficult days.  Love in Him,  Peggy

Skype and Photos

We all skyped with mom and dad tonight.  We are so grateful for being able to video chat with them (and Auntie Lal too - since they can only skype at her house in Dumaguete).  If you don't already have Skype - you gotta get an account and have an opportunity to skype with my folks.  Dad updated us on the recovery efforts.  They got Pastor Regalado's house fixed so he and his family are now back in their home.   They were so thankful to hear about more donations that have come in - that will surely help with re-building the homes of the families from the church.   They hope to send some photos of the progress and where they used the funds.

I realized as I was talking with them that it was Sunday there - so they had left the leading of the morning service with Pastor Regalado and the other ministry leaders .  They had attended Calvary Baptist Church in Dumaguete, to ask for continuing support from the Body there.  So many churches and businesses from Dumaguete have stepped up to help in so many ways.

Here are some more photos that I've snatched from the Ayungon Facebook page - some of the precious people who continue to struggle and the unsung heroes - volunteers - who have worked tirelessly to distribute help and hope to them - a picture tells a thousand words, so I'll shut up for now....
